Day 1: Kampala - Murchison Falls National Park
Drive through the districts of Luwero and Masindi with their traditional
farms and villages to Murchison Falls, stopping over at the many
stalls on the road to try the typical roasted cassava and other
local food.
We will reach Murchison Falls around 4pm, in time to walk to the
top of the falls.
Overnight in the Park
Day 2: Murchison Falls National Park
Leave at 7am for a walk in Budongo Forest –a virgin forest
with chimp population, prolific birdlife and huge mahogany trees.
Spend the afternoon on the boat to the source of Murchison Falls:
on the boat you will see plenty of crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants,
birds and hippos.
Overnight in the Park
Day 3: Fort Portal
Have an early morning breakfast and drive to Fort Portal through
Masindi, Hoima, Kagadi, Kibale and Kyenjojo, eating lunch on the
way. You will pass through sugarcane, tea, banana, coffee and
cocoa plantations. Arrive in Kibale National Park, Kanyanchu Visitor
center in time for lunch and a briefing about chimpanzee trekking
or a nature walk. You will track the chimps in their natural environment.
Dinner and over night in the National park.
Optional: Dinner with a local family where you will learn about the
Batooro traditional food, dances and life style. Night in Fort Portal.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking at Kibale National Park
Leave the hotel early in the morning to drive the Kibale National
Park and track chimpanzee throughout the morning. Alternatively
you could take a nature walk.
In the afternoon, we will drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Overnight in the Park
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast you will proceed to the launch on Kazinga channel
where you will take a 2 hour long cruise on the 27 km channel. This
cruise will introduce you to the bird life, and you will be in a position
to view birds endemic to the channel, prominent among them the Great
Rwenzori turacco. In addition to this you will come eye to eye with
schools of hippos, buffaloes and elephants. You will return to the
park head quarters for lunch and relaxation. In the late afternoon
you will visit the salt lake in Katwe where you will be introduced
to the complete different life style of the local people. Return to
the park headquarters for dinner and over night
Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park
You will leave your hotel at 9am to proceed to Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park. On this journey, you will drive through Ishasha
sector to visit the tree climbing lions. This activity is very
interesting as you see lions targeting their prey while in the
trees. You will have a packed lunch after which you will leave
the National Park and drive to Bwindi. You will arrive in Bwindi
Impenetrable National Park around 7pm or in Kisoro at 9:30pm.
Night in Bwindi or Kisoro
Optional: Leave at 7am and drive to the bat and python cave. This
cave is home to over 10,000 bats and it also harbours pythons
Day 7 Ruhengeri
After breakfast, leave Kisoro to reach Ruhengeri at the gate of Parc
National des Volcans. The journey is full of beautiful scenery as
you travel through the cultivated terraced hills of Kigezi and Rwanda.
Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Nest Camp or Muhabura Hotel.
Day 8 Mountain Gorilla tracking
Early in the morning you will enter the gorilla sanctuary of Parc
National des Volcans, the tropical rain forest covering the hills
surrounding Virunga Volcanoes. The trekking is a demanding but rewarding
experience. Ensure you bring with you enough water and your packed
lunch. The time spent in the forest depends on the movements of the
primates in their natural environment. After the activity you can
return at leisure to Gorilla Nest Camp or Muhabura Hotel in Ruhengeri
for dinner and overnight.
Day 9 Lake Kivu in Gisenyi
After breakfast, leave Ruhengeri and proceed to Gisenyi, a pretty
town located on the shores of beautiful Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s
main body of water. Relax on the beach.
Day 10 Traditions and culture of Rwanda
After breakfast, transfer to Nyungwe National Park. You will have
a stop over in Nyanza for a tour of the royal palace of the traditional
king of Rwanda, the Mwami. A storyteller is available to narrate for
you the prowess of the pre-colonial Kingdom. After the palace tour,
drive to Butare for a tour of the National Museum. After lunch proceed
to Gikongoro for a tour of the Genocide Memorial of Murambi. Arrive
in Nyungwe National Park in time for dinner and overnight at ORTPN
Guest House.
Day 11 Nyungwe National Park
After an early breakfast, you enter Nyungwe forest for the trekking
in search of the numerous troops of Colobus monkeys and/or tracking
the chimpanzee. Nyungwe is a vast, uncontaminated rain tropical forest
over 1000 sq km in size and you will be amazed by the intensely green
mountain vegetation. Ensure you carry with you packed lunch and water
for a picnic lunch. Return to ORTPN Guest House for dinner and overnight.
Day 12 Akagera National Park
After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park located along the
Tanzanian border of Rwanda. You reach in time for the evening game
drive. This park is famous for its herds of game animals including
Burchell's zebra, lions, elephants, topi, giraffes, impalas and over
425 species of birds including the shoe billed stork, African jacana,
sacred ibis and goliath heron. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game
Lodge.
Day 13 Akagera National Park
Early morning game drive along the trails of Akagera. As an optional
activity, you can board the boat in order to explore the waters of
Lake Ihema, and to see the large number of hippo, the huge Nile crocodile
and a variety of birds. In the afternoon return to Uganda for dinner
and overnight in Mbarara, at the Lake View Regency Hotel. Alternativly,
drive back to Kigali for dinner and overnight at Kigali International
Hotel.
Day 14
Drive back to Kampala passing through Lake Mburo national Park and
the equator.
